The damaged A7V limped back to the German lines, but eventually broke down. The A7V was not considered a success, and other designs were planned by Germany. However the end of the war meant none of the other tanks in development, or planned ones, would be finished such as the Oberschlesien and the ton K-Wagen. The extremely limited production of 20 made a very minor contribution, and most of the tanks about 50 in total that were fielded in action by Germany in World War I were captured British Mark IV tanks Beutepanzer.

Two vehicles closely resembling the A7V, one of which was named "Hedi", were among several used by Kokampf , a Freikorps tank unit, to quell civil unrest in Berlin in It is not known whether the vehicles were armour-plated. However, the idea is dismissed by reliable sources, since the fate of each A7V unit that saw service in WWI is known and there is no known official record or photographic evidence of A7Vs in Polish service. It was recovered three months later by Australian and British troops, and taken to Australia in as a trophy.

The vehicle stood outside the old Queensland Museum in Bowen Hills under an open-sided shelter for many years until being moved into the new Queensland Museum on Southbank in It was damaged by floodwater in , and taken for restoration to the Workshops Rail Museum , North Ipswich, Queensland.

After restoration it was displayed at the Australian War Memorial , Canberra , from until It has now been returned to the Queensland Museum. A running replica was built in by Bob Grundy of British Military Vehicles, Wigan, UK, a company that specialises in the restoration of old military vehicles. The replica is constructed of plywood and angle iron, using the engine, transmission and tracks from two Fordson County Crawlers — tracked agricultural vehicles — and is painted to represent A7V number , Schnuck. It is on display inside the Museum, and takes part in outdoor displays alongside the Museum's replica British Mark IV that was constructed for the film War Horse.

Yet, fictitious and fanciful as may be the incident, most graphic and real is the Beethoven that she paints. His was that sturdy sense of self- reliance, that haughty disregard of almost everything prized by others, that all-absorbing passion for creative activity and his too that terrible chain of suffering that renders one of the grandest and richest of lives so unspeakably sad. And yet, so did mind triumph over matter, and genius over circumstance, that through all these sufferings the creative force of his genius remained unbroken to the last.

It is upon these facts that the author has based this sketch. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy died in Leipzig, Nov. His health had been rapidly failing through excessive grief at the sudden death of his sister Fanny, the wife of Prof. Her entire life had been singularly interwoven with that of the great composer, and as a musician she was scarcely inferior to Mendelssohn himself. Hensel, the son of Fanny. He found it a combination of music and words without sympathy, but he made the music an echo of the words, and insisted that it should rigidly pre- ' serve their accents and rythm.

His dramatic effects are truly mar- velous, but he is especially great in depicting intense grief and tem- pestuous passion.

His masterpiece i3 his Iphigenia in Tauria, which was received with an enthusiasm never equalled in the annals of music. Brewers History of Germany. It is this turning- point in the composer's life, the day of the unprecedented success ot his "Iphigenie en Tauride," which is the subject of this sketch. But so complete was his triumph, that Rousseau himself, who had affirmed the impossibility of producing good effect by music set to the French language, openly recanted his theory and confessed himself overcome by the power of the master.

Then fol- lowed that historical battle between the Gluckists and the Piccinists, which so engrossed French society that it became customary to in- quire of a stranger to which faction he belonged, before his society would be accepted. From Gluck's IphigSnie, Act iii. Achilles has come to offor his assistance. Single-handed will he lead her through the midst of the frenzied people. But Iphigenia, in strains which so touchingly unite grandeur of soul with a woman's tenderness and the bitter pangs of separation, has declared her submission to the gods: Then follows the passionate outburst of Achilles: Britting greatly admired Georg Heym; he also wrote grotesque versions of biblical themes Hiob, Kain, Jor auf der Flucht, etc.

During the Second World War Britting turned increasingly to nature poetry, leaving behind the excesses of expressionism and the parodistic elements of Hamlet. Short stories also appeared: Lob des Weines, a collection of twenty poems, appeared in Britting turned to traditional themes and structures, although his imagery remained fresh and striking. Broch insisted upon an intellectualization of the novel, on working out, by sheer intellectual effort, the troubles of the world.

Theoretical essays alternated with works of imagination: Both Broch and Musil embarked upon vast novels that would encompass the problems of the age, combining rationalism and mysticism. The Schlafwander trilogy —2 , encyclopedic and polyhistorical novels, have as their concern the disintegration of values and the decay of European civilization in the period — The first, Pasenow oder die Romantik, has been compared with Fontane, but the secure ground of the nineteenth century has been left far behind: The second, Esch oder die Anarchie, portrays the insubstantiality of the existence of the small book-keeper Esch, who is able neither to escape from Europe nor to come to terms with it; the third, Huguenau oder die Sachlichkeit, portrays violence and anarchic forces which destroy the narcissistic world of the heroine.

The realization of the helplessness of the word when faced by the unspeakable will be a concern of many writers in the twentieth century, especially in German-speaking countries. The fourth novel, Die Schuldlosen , treats twentieth-century themes and uses certain dates , and as points of reference: The novel is uncomfortably suspended between political allegory and romantic myth. The character of Mutter Gisson with her Demeterlike qualities fails to convince, the symbolism being forced and obtrusive, but the description of mass psychology is masterful.
