God of mercy: you sent Jesus to seek and save the lost. We confess that we have lost track of your truth, and have wandered from your holy will. We have made our own way in the world. We have failed in love, forgotten to be just, and have turned away from your wisdom. Find us, God, forgive our sin, and bring us back to you, for the sake of your Son, our only Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord.

Assurance of Grace Hear the good news!

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin and be alive to all that is good. People of God, hear the good news: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

St. Augustine Confessions - Book Eight

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end, Amen, Amen! New Testament Readings: Acts 2: 14a, 14aBut Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, 36Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified. Epistle Reading: 1 Peter 17If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. Gospel Reading: Luke 13Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

Midnight Confessions

Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Of course, few of us have to walk a lot these days, but it was the primary mode of transportation in Biblical times. And you know how nice it is to walk together.

Confession

You can complain about the walk, you can converse, and you can keep each other company as you keep putting one foot in front of the other. And it is especially nice if someone behind you catches up and falls in step with you, and you discover whole new areas of conversation.

A couple of days after Good Friday, two disciples probably not of the twelve were on the road out to Emmaus, a bit outside Jerusalem. As they walked, this guy fell in with them, and, hearing their tales of woe, started explaining it all. It was wonderful to have someone on the road with them. And, just as Jesus met those walkers on their road in Palestine, so Jesus can meet us as we are on our walk through life. The women had come back just after sunrise full of wild stories. But rumors are only rumors, women are always telling wild stories, and for at least two of the people who had followed him, there was nothing left to do that Sunday but get out of town.

And where did they go?

On the Road Again

They went to Emmaus. And where was Emmaus and why did they go there? It was no place in particular really, and the only reason that they went there was that it was some seven miles distant from a situation that had become unbearable. All the stories about how Jesus appeared to people after his death are strange, and the strangest thing about them is how unglamorous they are, how little fanfare there is about them….

But here, for instance, all we have are two men walking along a dusty road to a town that nobody had heard of much, suddenly aware of footsteps approaching them from behind and being joined then by a stranger who was Jesus but whom they did not even recognize, perhaps because even when he was alive they had never really recognized him, had seen him not as he actually was but only as they had wanted him to be… And it was only then, only as he took the bread and blessed it and broke it, that they knew who he was.

Desperation alone, one would think, might have led to greater efforts. More than twenty of them attacked Dr. Blunt's house on Tuesday morning, a little before day-break, defended by two men and three boys. They fled precipitately at the first fire; and their future plans of mischief, were entirely disconcerted and broken up.

Frequently bought together

Escaping thence, each individual sought his own safety either in concealment, or by returning home, with the hope that his participation might escape detection, and all were shot down in the course of a few days, or captured and brought to trial and punishment. Nat has survived all his followers, and the gallows will speedily close his career. His own account of the conspiracy is submitted to the public, without comment.

It reads an awful, and it is hoped, a useful lesson, as to the operations of a mind like his, endeavoring to grapple with things beyond its reach. How it first became bewildered and confounded, and finally corrupted and led to Page 5 the conception and perpetration of the most atrocious and heart-rending deeds. It is calculated also to demonstrate the policy or our laws in restraint of this class of our population, and to induce all those entrusted with their execution, as well as our citizens generally, to see that they are strictly and rigidly enforced. Each particular community should look to its own safety, whilst the general guardians of the laws, keep a watchful eye over all.

If Nat's statements can be relied on, the insurrection in this county was entirely local, and his designs confided but to a few, and these in his immediate vicinity.
