Abstract The origin and evolution of the domestic dog remains a controversial question for the scientific community, with basic aspects such as the place and date of origin, and the number of times dogs were domesticated, open to dispute. Introduction The domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris , one of our closest companions in the animal kingdom, has followed us to every continent of the world. Results Sample collection and whole genome sequencing 58 canids from around the world were gathered for this study.

Figure 1 Population structure and genetic diversity of 58 canids. Full size image. Figure 2 Demographic and migration histories for the domestic dog. Table 1: Gene ontology analysis of genes selected during the first stage of dog domestication Full size table. Discussion Based on genome sequences from a worldwide collection of dogs, especially a large collection of indigenous dogs from southern East Asia, this study provides strong genetic evidence that the domestic dog originated in southern East Asia.
